Fifty-Two

“Everyone up! Let’s go! Time for beddy-bye!” Thomas shouted, all too soon.

As I stood up, I took a look down at my canteen. Oh boy…how in the world are YOU going to save me from that fire. Twenty or so ounces of water, and the fire Darcy spoke of sounds like a gigantic blaze.

From hell.

What the heck was I going to do?

“C’mon man, relax, you’ll handle it fine.” Darc said, as we walked inside the building.

“You make it sound as if I’m the only one dealing with this.”

“Well, you are and you’re not. We won’t really know until its over.”

“Dude, you’re getting more confusing the more I talk to you.” I shook my head in exasperation.

“Just relax, Kevin.” Darc said, turning toward his room.

“So, I may not see you in the morning?” I asked.

“Its possible, man.”

“Doesn’t everybody notice in the morning when several people are gone?”

“I don’t know, Kevin, I’m not everybody else.”

“Who are you then?” I stared at him, my eyes fixed, waiting for his reply.

“Just go to bed, Kevin,” Darc said, and then closed his door behind him.

I turned around and looked into my room. My roommate was not in bed yet.

Maybe he will be one of the ones that disappears?

I sat down on the bed and set my canteen on the bedside table. My heart was beginning to race a little faster than I would have preferred. I looked around. Nothing had changed. My room was exactly the way I had left it.

I stood up for a minute and walked to my window. I peered around at the scenery, trying to spot anything different, but nothing caught my eye. I walked around my bed to one of the closets. I opened it, looked inside, but still saw nothing different.

I got on my knees and reached around underneath my bedframe. Still nothing. I picked up my mattress, but got the same result. Everything was exactly the way it had been earlier in the day. Nothing had been touched.

I heard shuffling at the door.

“Kevin, time for your bedtime medicine!” Mae announced, walking in with two cups in her hands.

“Is there any way I could convince you that I don’t need those tonight?” I asked, sitting down on my bed.

“I’m afraid not, Kevin. Your doctor hasn’t okayed that yet.” She walked over to me. I noticed her cross shimmer in the light. For some reason, I realized that these pills were okay. It was okay to take them from her. If it had been anybody else, there might have been a problem, but taking them from Mae was the right thing to do.

Good boy.

I took the cup from her and gulped the pills down.

“Just relax, Kevin, everything is going to be fine.” She walked out of the room and shut the door behind her.

You’re fine.

Ever the romantic.

I laid down and looked up at the ceiling, the ceiling that had tried to kill me the night before. What would keep it from doing the same tonight? What would keep the whole place from going up in flames, for that matter? What the heck had Darc meant earlier?

Just lay back, and go to sleep.

I looked at my canteen, took one more glance around the room, and let the drugs do their work.
