Fifty-One

“Kevvvvvbooooo….getting busy with the ladioooossss…” he smiled as he said it, but it still pissed me off.

“Screw off, man, she’s just a little girl.” I remarked, brushing past Darc on my way to the patio bench.

“Dude…that girl is HOT! You have got to give me the inside scoop on her!” he was literally drooling at the mouth as he sat down next to me.

“No real scoop. She’s just a little screwed up, like everybody else.” That was a lie, but for some reason the truth didn’t seem appropriate right now.

The truth? Not appropriate? Kevin…you should be ashamed!

“Screwed up or not, she’s a hottie. Its too bad they don’t let us socialize in here.” He lit up another cigarette, sans lighter.

“So get her number if you care so much.” I was beginning to get annoyed.

I wouldn’t call that annoyed. I’ve got another word in mind.

“Nah, we’ve got more important things to worry about.” He said nonchalantly.

“Like what?”

“Like the fire, man. The fire.” He sounded like it should’ve been obvious to me that he would know about it.

“How do you know about it?” You would think I would’ve been a little freaked out that he would have knowledge of it, but I truly was long past being surprised about anything.

“Dude, everybody knows about the fire.” He took a long puff.

“How the hell does everybody know?” I peered over at him.

“It comes every night, man.”

“What?”

“Yeah, it comes every night. You’ve never noticed it before?”

“Um, no. No, I have not noticed a goddamn fire. What the hell are you talking about?”

“There’s this fire. It comes in and clears the whole place out. Some people are left in the morning, some aren’t. It’s a very natural thing and it happens every single night.” He took one more long puff on his cigarette.

“Why haven’t I seen it before?”

“You don’t want to see it, Kevin. Its quite nasty.” Another long puff.

“Yes, I do want to see it. I want to see it very badly.” I was getting anxious now. I needed to see this. I HAD to see this. Right now, this was the most important thing in my life.

“Just open your eyes, man,” Darc said. I stared at him. He stared at me.

What the hell is going on in your brain?

You know what’s going on, Kevin, just do what you’re supposed to do.

With that, he took another long puff from his cigarette and then flicked it through the air.
