Fifty-Three

“Daddy!” I looked down, and there he was! He was hugging my leg! My son! Christian! I had found him!

“Critter! I’ve missed you so much!” I picked him up and gave him a big hug. He’d gotten a little heavier since I’d last seen him. I guess a year in a child’s life can make quite a difference.

“Christian, I’ve been looking for you for so long, how’d you find me?” I was smiling ear to ear, so amazed and so happy that he was with me.

“The fire, daddy!” He looked at me with those huge blue eyes. He was smiling. Christian looked like the happiest kid alive.

“How do YOU know about the fire?” How DID he know about the fire?

“Everybody knows about it, daddy! Stop being silly!” He laughed.

“Then tell me about it! Daddy is interested in the fire.”

“It comes every night and takes people with it.”

“What do you mean, takes people with it?”

“People leave.”

“But HOW do they leave, Chris? What does the fire do?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do YOU see it?”

“No one sees it.” He started to hang his head.

“Why not?”

“I don’t know. Daddy, I have to go now. Let me down.” He started to squirm out of my arms.

“No! No! I just found you, how can I let you go now?” My emotions were truly starting to overwhelm me.

“You have to, dad.”

“Why? What happens if I don’t let you go?” He finally squirmed out of my grip and stood in front of me.

“Don’t worry, dad.” He started to walk away.

“But Christian….” I shouted after him. “Please come back!” But he was gone. He was gone. I had finally found him, just to have him walk away from me. My whole goal, my whole life, had just walked away from me. And there was nothing I could do about it.

It's okay.

Why?

Because you’re dreaming Kevin.

Then who are you?

Just open your eyes and you’ll find me.

Why can’t you just tell me who you are?

Because you wouldn’t believe me unless you saw me with your own eyes.

You must be God.

Silence.
